We should have a couple litters of rabbits this week. Penny is up first and she went right to work building her nest as soon as I put the box in her cage. She is a first time mom and you can never be sure if they are going to have good instincts. It is a fun thing to watch. They are quite frantic about getting the nest made sometimes. Penny is a New Zealand rabbit – a large meat breed, and this litter of kits (a kit is a baby rabbit) will hopefully become some of our 4-H rabbits. We will have our fingers crossed that she will be a great mom and also that the weather warms up just a bit. The kits should be fine even in below freezing temperatures as long as they have a good nest, but a little more warmth is always helpful. Hopefully I’ll have a good update to post here in a couple days.
