I was checking out a weightlifting plan by Jamie Eason when I came across her recipe video for Italian Turkey Burgers. The name alone intrigued me, and they looked so simple. I like to have healthy foods already prepared for the week, so these will be a perfect lean healthy protein for lunches!
They turned out SO GOOD and I can think of a few ways to use them such as topping with a little spaghetti sauce and Parmesan, or with honey mustard on top of a bed of salad greens.
I use recipes as a guideline and always end up doing my own thing, so below is what I did.
Ingredients and Recipe for Italian Turkey Burgers
2 pounds lean ground turkey
2 medium sized shredded zucchinis (this was all I had on hand, I could have used another one)
1/2 of a medium sized red onion, minced
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp dried basil leaf – I’m not a huge basil fan so I went light on it
1/2 tsp oregano powder (could use dried oregano leaf, but increase measurement)
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp white ground pepper (black pepper would be fine too)
1/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
Mix all ingredients, form into 8-10 patties and place on a foil-lined baking sheet. BROIL at highest oven temp (500 degrees is mine) until browned on top. Flip them, and broil the other side until done.
Baking time was about 20 minutes for mine but it will vary according to your oven and the size of the burgers.
I personally would not try to grill these because I think they would fall apart.
Switcheroos and extra notes:
You could use a different type of meat such as ground chicken. I’m going to try some of our home-raised rabbit next time.
I also want to try a drop of our Taste of Italy Essential Oil blend next time. I simply forgot that I had it in the cupboard.
