We have been busy this month! I am going to try updating the farm stuff in Farm Friday posts on a regular basis.
The chicks moved out to the garden. Then, because a sneaky hawk found a way to get dinner, we had to move them into the Fortress AKA the big coop. Sadly, we lost 3 chicks this week to that darn hawk. I guess that’s why I ordered more than we needed.
I gave them a new roost, which is actually an old pallet. They love it!
We had a rabbit population explosion with a new litter of EIGHT! We thought this momma was a dud because this was her 3rd time. She was a couple days late when she finally gave birth.
This collage shows just how quickly the kits change and grow! In a couple more days they will open their eyes and start learning to hop.
The duck flock has been trimmed back to a manageable number for winter. To be honest, it was a pleasure. Greg and I discovered that we make a great butchering team, and it is one way we get to spend time together. We finished 5 ducks in under 2 hours!
We had one duck who I liken to Fran Drescher with a bullhorn. She quacked nonstop as loud as a duck can quack and it was ridiculous. We kept joking about that scene in the movie Babe where the farm wife says “we’ve got to do something about that duck!”
Quiet has been restored to the homestead, and we will have a lovely smoked duck dinner soon.
One of these birds is not like the other heehee!
Aside from all the animal shenanigans, we had a damaged tree cut down in the front yard that needed cleaned up. Sometimes you have to work after dark…I got to be the light source while hubby put the chainsaw to work.
We have been blessed with amazing weather and sunsets this month! We will have to start winterizing this week because it won’t hold out for too much longer.
