DIY All Natural Body Butter With Essential Oils
Sometimes I want to stretch my oils and make them go a little further. Making a simple body butter is a simple way to get essential oils to cover larger areas of the body.
What do you need?
Coconut oil – we use coconut oil exclusively as a moisturizer. It soaks in super fast and is not greasy.
Shea Butter -totally optional but I like it. It has a nice feel and I think it helps the coconut oil whip up better.
A glass mixing bowl.
A mixer – hand held or stand, doesn’t matter.
Your choice of therapeutic grade essential oils. Lesser grades smell nice, but they don’t really help any conditions (tried and tested!) I use Young Living oils and get them here.
You will want the coconut oil to be soft, but not melty! Coconut oil is solid below 72 degrees and melts above that, so if you need to stick it in the fridge for a bit go ahead and do that.
Scoop your coconut oil into the mixing bowl and start whipping – kind of like making whipped cream
Once it is nicely whipped, add your essential oils and blend. You can divide it into smaller batches before adding the essential oils if you want use different recipes.
A little goes a very long way so start with a small amount or you may have a mess to clean up.
Store it in a glass container. I find wide mouth mason jars are perfect for this! Little jelly jars make nice gifts.
Here are some oil combos you can try – but I just use whatever oil I like.
A general guideline is 30 drops of EO to one cup of coconut oil. You may adjust amounts if you like.
Blends For Pain and Inflammation

Pain blend 2: 10 drops each Peppermint, Wintergreen, Copaiba
*I play around with these recipes and add different oils like Cypress, Idaho Balsam Fir, Idaho Blue Spruce, Sacred Mountain, Lemongrass, etc.
1/2 cup of the whipped coconut oil
approx7 drops each Cedarwood and Lavender
1/2 cup whipped coconut oil
approx 7 drops each Roman Chamomile oil, Lavender, Cedarwood
Skin Care Blends
Lavender only – this would be very soothing for sunburns, dry skin
Lavender, Frankincense, and Melaleuca (aka tea tree oil) in equal parts for skin irritations, eczema relief. Myrhh is also great to use!
